Un Día sin Inmigrantes el 1 de julio de 2024, es una respuesta al inconstitucional proyecto de ley SF 2340 en Iowa. Este día es un llamamiento a los inmigrantes de todo el estado para que se solidaricen absteniéndose de comprar, vender, abrir negocios, no trabajar o asistir a la escuela. Sirve como una poderosa demostración de las contribuciones esenciales que los inmigrantes hacen a la sociedad y pone de relieve los efectos adversos de la legislación discriminatoria. Al unirse en esta protesta pacífica, los inmigrantes pretenden sensibilizar a la opinión pública, defender sus derechos e impulsar políticas justas y equitativas que defiendan su dignidad y respeten su contribución a la comunidad.
A Day Without Immigrants on July 1st, 2024, is a response to the unconstitutional SF 2340 Bill in Iowa. This day is a call for immigrants across the state to stand in solidarity by refraining from buying, selling, operating businesses, working, or attending school. It serves as a powerful demonstration of the essential contributions immigrants make to society and highlights the adverse effects of discriminatory legislation. By uniting in this peaceful protest, immigrants aim to raise awareness, advocate for their rights, and push for fair and just policies that uphold their dignity and respect their contributions to the community.

Join us for our next Academia Bembé Adult Drum Session: Salsa Styles for Conga, led by Bembé Teaching Artist, Andy Miller!
This three-week workshop will explore common conga patterns in Salsa and Latin Jazz music. Participants will learn the basic two-drum conga patterns for Bolero, Cha Cha Cha, Mambo, Cumbia, and Merengue. Participants may enroll in the class if they have previously taken Bembé’s Conga Technique class or with instructor approval. Instruments needed: One pair of conga drums per student (provided). Students are welcome and encouraged to bring their own instruments (congas) if they have them.
This session will run from April 8th-April 22nd on Mondays, from 7:45-9:00pm. ALL workshops will be held at Bembé’s NEW Casa Cultural located at 611 S. Layton Blvd., Milwaukee, 53215 (across the street from the Mitchell Park Domes). Open to ages 18+. Save your spot today before it’s too late!

Meet artists Armando Jimenez and his son Alejandro who are visiting from Oaxaca, Mexico. They will demonstrate carving and painting as they create Alebrijes. Alebrijes are brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of fantasy and mythical creatures made of wood and Papier-mâché. Explore books featuring Jimenez family artwork and folk art of Mexico. This will be a live demonstration and the artists can answer questions about the history of this art form.
