Bembé welcomes you to our biggest production of the year, “Journey the Atlantic/Viajando el Atlántico,” a community celebration of Afro-Latino musical culture!
Follow us on a journey through the African Diaspora with music and dance from West Africa, Colombia, Mexico, Brazil, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and present-day United States and enjoy performances by our Academia Bembé youth, teen and adult students and guest performers, including special guest Maestro Alberto “Beto” Torrens of San Juan, PR, and more! This is an intergenerational, all-star line-up!
This year’s celebration will take place at Alverno College’s Pitman Theatre. This performance is FREE, family-friendly, and open to the community. RSVP ENCOURAGED.

Meet artists Armando Jimenez and his son Alejandro who are visiting from Oaxaca, Mexico. They will demonstrate carving and painting as they create Alebrijes. Alebrijes are brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of fantasy and mythical creatures made of wood and Papier-mâché. Explore books featuring Jimenez family artwork and folk art of Mexico. This will be a live demonstration and the artists can answer questions about the history of this art form.

Cinco de Mayo served as an inspirational springboard for this unique concert celebrating both Mexican music and heritage. The concert opens with José Pablo Moncayo’s Huapango, a lively and joyful tribute to the popular music of the Mexican state of Veracruz. Then, I am thrilled to welcome Mexican pianist Jorge Federico Osorio as he makes his MSO debut performing Manuel Ponce’s romantic Piano Concerto No. 1. Silvestre Revueltas is one of the giants among Mexican composers, and I am very excited to introduce to you his suite from the movie La Noche de Los Mayas, featuring a multimedia presentation of Mayan art. And finally, a great mariachi ensemble Mariachi Los Camperos will play selections of Mexican songs with the Madison Symphony. A truly unique concert designed to lift your spirits and bring my 30th anniversary celebration to a rousing and joyful finale. – John DeMain, Music Director
El Cinco de Mayo sirve como la inspiración para este concierto único que celebra la música y herencia mexicana. El concierto empieza con Huapango, compuesto por José Pablo Moncayo, y es un animado y alegre homenaje a la música popular del estado mexicano de Veracruz. Luego, acogimos a Jorge Federico Osorio y su debut en Madison, tocando el primer concierto de Manuel Ponce. Silvestre Revueltas es uno de los compositores mexicanos más famosos, y estoy muy entusiasmado de presentar su Suite de la película La Noche de los Mayas, acompañado por una presentación multimedia del arte maya. La historia musical de Geru y su Legión 7 comienza cuando reconocen en él un sonido diferente invitándolo a participar de manera especial en Conjunto Legendario. Al terminar su participación, su familia da cuenta del augurio musical de este muchacho y deciden formar una agrupación que acompañe a quien ya pintaba como un artista de talla internacional, es así como nace Legión 7 reunión de primos y familiares que contaban ya con un historial de participación en diferentes agrupaciones. A pesar de que es joven, su calidad musical demuestra que tienen mucho que dar. Su popularidad se ha creado casi de inmediato lo cual se demuestra porque ya ha compartido escenario con agrupaciones de talla internacional como son Invasores de NL. y Conjunto Primavera.
Chavos de Tierra Caliente surgió en el poblado llamado “Las Juntas de Poturo”de la zona conocida como “Tierra Caliente”, su estilo interpretativo es el llamado“Género Calentano”. Son reconocidos en la República y han alternado con artistas como: Larry Hernández, Calibre 50, La Adictiva, Banda Carnaval, El Trono de México, La Arrolladora, El Recodo, Pequeños Musical y Ángeles Azules, entre otras.

The MSO is delighted to welcome Mexican conductor Iván López-Reynoso for his U.S. symphonic debut! López-Reynoso conducts Ravel’s orchestral arrangement of Mussorgsky’s impressionistic Pictures at an Exhibition, as well as Beethoven’s First Piano Concerto, featuring López-Reynoso’s compatriot and “an imaginative interpreter with a powerful technique” (The New York Times), pianist Jorge Federico Osorio. The program opens with a suite from the 1936 film Redes (“Nets”) by Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas.
